The Mystery of Protein Part 1
April 12, 2008
Hey, I bet you thought I forgot about you this week. Lets just say I've had the kind of week that gives people nervous breakdowns. I see it as a victory that I came out with nothing more than a scruffy beard and lessons learned. I want to cover a few topics related to protein drinks. I think most people know by now that we sell various types of protein drinks. And I know that most poeple have some huge misconceptions on how a protein shake fits into their diet. Most folks I talk to are under the impression that protein drinks (or shakes) are only for guys that are trying to pack on huge amounts of muscle. While it is true that protein shakes are an important part of building muscles and getting huge, they are still very beneficial to everyone else. Let me give you some examples of how protein shakes can help achieve different results. First, we have to remember that protein powder is just a food supplement. It's like eating a skinless chicken breast or a can of tuna, but it's liquid. Convenient, great tasting and takes less time to prepare. If you are like most people we work with, you probably want to lose some fat. (Get lean) Implementing a protein shake into your diet is very simple. Think of it as a fat free, carb free snack. It can be a substitute for just about any snack. Where people go wrong with protein shakes, when trying to lose fat, is that they ADD them to their current eating habbits instead of using it as a substitute. For older individuals who are, whether they like it or not, losing muscle and bone mass and an increased rate. Protein can be a life preserver, so to speak. I often inquire about what people are eating on a daily basis and 90% of them are not getting a sufficient amount of protein. If your diet is not up to par in the protein department you will be losing muscle and bone mass at an increased rate. By implementing a protein supplement, you can be sure that your muscles are nourished and you may feel a little more jump in your step too. (no gaurantee on the jump part though) And of course for the athletes, they are playing hard and training even harder. Depleting their muscles day in and day out. They will greatly benefit from an increased protein intake. Drink one between meals as a snack, and chug one after training. I'll tell you more about how and when to use a protein shake next week in part II. Stay Strong Paulv
